Yacht charter at Mallorca — Palma, the Tramuntana coast and the run to Menorca.
Mallorca is the practical base of the Balearics and, on its north-west side, one of the more dramatic coastlines in the western Mediterranean. Palma has an international airport twenty minutes from the water and the best provisioning in the islands; twenty miles up the coast the Tramuntana range drops into the sea in terraces that are UNESCO-listed.
The Tramuntana coast
North-west from Palma the mountains meet the water. Anchor below Deià and take the tender to Sa Foradada, where paella is cooked over wood on a headland with no road worth the name.
Sóller, Cala Tuent and the coves under Puig Major are the anchorages worth planning the week around — deep, clear and sheltered from the prevailing wind.
South and east
The south-east coast is a series of calas — Mondragó, Sa Calobra, Cala Llombards — smaller, sandier and easier in a fresh northerly than the Tramuntana side.
Menorca is three hours east: a biosphere reserve with no high-rise development and a northern coast of red-sand coves that see a fraction of Mallorca's traffic.

- Ibiza is two to three hours south-west; Menorca about three hours east
- The Tramuntana coast is exposed to the north — the south-east calas are the fallback
- Posidonia seagrass is protected across the Balearics: buoy fields, not free anchoring
